Minister Gajdoš meets with U.S. Ambassador A. Sterling

The SVK-U.S. cooperation on defence, strategic documents and the modernisation of the SVK Armed Forces topped the agenda of todayʼs meeting between SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and the Ambassador of the United States of America to Slovakia, His Excellency Mr Adam H. Sterling. Minister Gajdoš and Ambassador Sterling built on last weekʼs visit to the SVK MOD of NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) U.S. Army General Curtis M. Scaparrotti, who concurrently acts as Commander of U.S. European Command. General Scaparrotti visited Slovakia to attend the Central European Chiefs of Defence Conference.

“We will continue to modernise the Armed Forces systemically and systematically, with a focus on pro-Atlantic and pro-European solutions,” said Head of the MOD. In this regard, he expressed his satisfaction with the first two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters having entered service with the SVK Air Force. “On the future of our supersonic fleet, I informed Ambassador Sterling that we will submit a solution proposal to the SVK Government no later than the end of June, whereas only U.S. F16 and Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets are now being considered for procurement,” said Minister Gajdoš.

Speaking about the MODʼs strategic documents, the Minister of Defence reminded that the SVK MOD will go ahead with modernisation projects in line with the Long-Term Defence Development Plan with an Outlook to 2030.

Also discussed at the meeting was NATO-EU cooperation. Minister Gajdoš informed U.S. Ambassador Sterling of Slovakiaʼs first successful Indirect Fire Support (IFS) project – “EuroArtillery” under the PESCO initiative. In this regard, Head of the MOD emphasised that our country aims to build its defence capabilities purposefully, so that the SVK military is ready to carry out its tasks. Special mention was made of the excellent cooperation with the Indiana National Guard, with which the SVK Armed Forces have partnered for many years, especially on training and exercises.
