Minister P. Gajdoš holds talks with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade P. Szijjártó

SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš today met with HUN Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade P. Szijjártó at MOD Main Building. Topics of discussion included bilateral cooperation, joint international exercises, cooperation on international crisis management operations, and the EUʼs PESCO initiative, including Slovakiaʼs EuroArtillery Indirect Fire Support (IFS) project.

Speaking of the SVK-HUN defence ties, SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “We have operated together as part of UNFICYP in Cyprus and the Multinational Engineer Battalion Tisa for years, and reciprocal participation in international exercises has become a matter of course. We are not only partners in NATO and the EU, but also in V4, which is a pillar of cooperation in the region, and Hungary is currently holding the V4 Presidency.”

Another theme was the potential cooperation on defence modernisation, with a focus on its pro-European and pro-Atlantic direction. At the meeting, Minister Gajdoš also underscored Hungaryʼs annual role in organising the act of commemoration in the village of Hejce. “We have met representatives of your country in Hejce for the 12th time already, and I highly value that you have sympathised with our feelings of loss in the greatest tragedy of our Armed Forces,” he emphasised.

Both Ministers met for talks in May 2017 during the official visit of SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš to Hungary. Since then the Office of Defence Attaché of Hungary has reopened in Bratislava, which makes the communications and cooperation between the countries easier and more intense. The Defence Attaché of Hungary in Bratislava is Lt Col Csaba Vida.
