Trebišov-based troops undertake tactical training in Slanské Hills

Members of 2nd Mechanised Company, Combined Mechanised Battalion Trebišov, are undertaking tactical training across the eastern slopes of the Slanské Hills on Trebišov Garrisonʼs training ground at Veľké Ozorovce for the first two weeks of February 2019.

Commander of 2nd Mech Coy Capt Tomáš Korobanič, the Officer in Command of the exercise, shed more light on the tasks of the intense training. “This is a two-week intense training. It is geared towards training and testing platoon and section 1ICs and 2ICs in exercising command and control of their units in defensive and offensive operations and hence give the other ranks an opportunity to operate their vehicles under the said conditions. For example, our troops will be exercised in conducting missions to halt an enemy advance, taking up defensive positions without enemy contact, carrying out defensive operations at night, as well as mounting offensive operational taskings.”

According to Capt Korobanič, this training is more strenuous than usual, because recently there was a considerable replacement of command staff personnel, and so is true of members of the other ranks. In fact, the most experienced commanders and members of the other ranks have been reassigned to 1st Mech Coy as part of the organisational changes within the Battalion. “That is why we are starting from scratch in many areas of our activity. I am supposed to have 4 [platoon] commanders in my company, yet I have only 3, of whom only 1 is experienced. And I am supposed to have 9 section leaders, but I only have 3. Moreover, 80% of section second-in-commands (2ICs) are newcomers. Until recently they served as IFV drivers or gunners. So this training is about immersing commanders in training to a full extent. So that they can synchronise the activity of their platoons and sections. About 20% of the other ranks are newcomers. They were enlisted in the Army at the end of last year or at the beginning of this year on graduation from BMT at the Training Base Martin.”

In training and integrating new commanders and soldiers into 2nd Mech Coy, Capt Korobanič can only rely on a few experienced soldiers who have stayed with the Coy. Among them are Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Sgt Maj Pavol Krištan, Platoon Sergeants Sgt 1st Class Pavol Levčík and Sgt 1st Class Bohuslav Varga, and Platoon Commander Lt Marián Bača. Despite the said difficulties, training is progressing steadily ahead. Capt Korobanič, who has been 1IC of 2nd Mech Coy for three years, made a point that taking responsibility for their subordinates was a major challenge for new section 2ICs. Until recently they took responsibility only for themselves, but now they are faced with supervising a small group of soldiers as they plan and conduct operational tasks. While planning operations, they need to make initial sketches. And they need to do them alone, even without the help of section 1ICs, as most sections have none.

The physical readiness and psychological resilience of new 1ICs, 2ICs and members of 2nd Mech Coy are being thoroughly tested during the ongoing winter tactical training in the Slanské Hills. In his final remarks, Capt Korobanič said with satisfaction that although the new 1ICs, 2ICs and soldiers lacked experience, they demonstrated great commitment and initiative during the training.
