Complex revamp of Military Sports Centre’s Athletics Stadium in Banská Bystrica launched with foundation stone tapping ceremony

Today (28 August 2019), Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš joined Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko and Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini in tapping the foundation stone at the SNP Athletics Stadium in Banská Bystrica to mark the launch of its complex revamp. The aim of the Defence Ministry is to redevelop the sports facility in full compliance with today’s technical norms and the criteria of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for international and national competitions.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Last week the SNP Stadium marked its 60th birthday and I am very pleased that it is today, on the eve of the nation-wide 75th SNP anniversary celebrations, that we have launched the Stadiums complex reconstruction by tapping the foundation stone.” As he further explained, through the revamp of the Military Sports Centre’s Athletics Stadium, the MOD is committed to enhancing the quality of training for sportsmen and women, the SVK National Team, and the SVK Armed Forces Team for domestic and international sporting events, including delivering high quality training for junior talents.

The MOD plans to revamp the Stadium’s main training ground, seating stands, stadium and access roads, and green areas. The full redevelopment of the SNP Athletics Stadium, operated by the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre, is due to be complete at an estimated cost of over €12.9 million, VAT included, by the end of 2020.

Once reconstructed, the SNP Athletics Stadium will also meet the certification requirements as a UEFA category 2 soccer stadium with an expected capacity of approx. 4,000 seats.
