Minister Gajdoš takes part in 75th SNP Anniversary Commemorations in Banská Bystrica

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš took part in the nation-wide 75th SNP Anniversary Commemorations in Banská Bystrica. On this occasion, he paid his respects to the memory of WW2 victims during a wreath-laying ceremony at the SNP Museum today (29 August 2019).

Speaking after the wreath-laying ceremony, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “It is important for us never to forget the memory of the Slovak National Uprising heroes to whom we are thankful that we can live in a free and democratic society today and show that we do care about our history.”

Today’s SNP National Event began with a flypast of SVK AF aircraft and a wreath-laying ceremony at 10:00 and was followed by a cultural programme with speeches by Slovak and foreign dignitaries at 11:00 and a military parade at 15:00.

The Slovak National Uprising was one of the largest anti-Nazi resistance movements in Europe, with nearly 80,000 soldiers and partisans under the leadership of Brigadier General Ján Golian and Divisional General Rudolf Viest. The mission of the SNP was to open up the corridor for advancing armies to liberate Czechoslovakia. However, the uprising was crushed by Nazi occupation troops and survived as a partisan resistance force until the liberation of Slovakia.
