State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák participates in Informal Meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Helsinki

State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Róbert Ondrejcsák led a SVK delegation to the Informal Meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Helsinki on 28-29 August 2019. The meeting was organised by the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
 
Day 1 started off with discussions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of security and defence during an informal dinner on Wednesday, 28 August.
 
During Day 2, Ministers discussed the consequences of climate change on security and defence, including operational conditions, military planning and capabilities development. State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák said that Slovakia has subscribed to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The climatic change issue is a priority of the Finnish EU Presidency’s agenda and is being addressed in different formats of the Council.
 
Ministers also discussed the Coordinated Maritime Presences Concept by the European External Action Service (EEAS).
 
At the conclusion of the meeting, Defence Ministers and Foreign Affairs Ministers had a working lunch where they dealt with hybrid threats.

The Informal Meeting of EU Defence Ministers was also attended by Deputy Secretary General of NATO Rose Gottemoeller and Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
 
On the margins of the informal meeting, State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák had a tour of the European Centre of Excellence for Combating Hybrid Threats (Hybrid CoE) in Helsinki, where he was updated on the Centre’s main goals and tasks. He said that Slovakia intends to join the Hybrid CoE in the coming period.
