Minister Gajdoš: I am proud of our men and women in uniform who staged this military parade, thereby paying homage to SNP heroes

Servicemen and women held the SNP Military Parade as part of the nation-wide 75th Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Anniversary Commemorations in Banská Bystrica today (29 August 2019). During the parade, over 2,000 soldiers, including crews operating military hardware, moved in formation along the parade route. Apart from the mobile columns, they formed 34 marching columns with two marching groups dressed in WW2 uniforms.

Speaking after the SNP Military Parade, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “I am proud of our men and women in uniform who successfully staged this ceremonial military parade, thereby paying homage to the SNP heroes in such an extraordinary way.” He took the opportunity to apologise once again to residents of Banská Bystrica and the surrounding municipalities for any inconveniences that may have been caused by the traffic restrictions in place.

The main types of weaponry in service with the SVK Army, Air Force, Special Operations Forces (SOF) and Military Police (MP) were paraded through the city. Residents and visitors watched on as military capabilities and the latest additions to the inventory of the Slovak Armed Forces were displayed.

The SVK Army showcased military hardware such as T-72 main battle tanks (MBTs), infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), ZUZANA 2000 Self-propelled Gun Howitzers, MODULAR Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), and Polaris vehicles. The flypast was formed of aircraft from the Slovak Air Force’s fleets of MiG-29 fighter jets, Spartan airlifters, Mi-17s, and UH-60M Black Hawks. The SVK Military Police’s vehicles were on show as well. A total of 200 pieces of military hardware rolled down the parade route and 15 aircraft were involved in the flypast formation.

Based on the Government’s decision, 106,880 euros were spent to prepare and stage the parade.
