MOD military and civilian staff mark 75th anniversary of Slovak National Uprising and Constitution Day

Today (2 September 2019), MOD military and civilian staff gathered in front of MOD Main Building to attend a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) and Constitution Day.

Recognising the heroism of anti-Nazi fighters, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš emphasised: “It is truly important to keep reminding ourselves that their determination, courage and love for our homeland paved the way for a new direction of our nation. Sadly, todays reality is that veterans are disappointed, because our society has repeatedly allowed extremism to develop in different forms.” At the ceremony, he once again thanked the servicemen and women who performed ceremonial duties for the military parade as part of the 75th SNP National Event in Banská Bystrica.

On the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the SVK Constitution, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš noted that, for the emerging Slovak Republic, this meant laying the foundations of statehood and signing up to the guarantee of human rights and freedoms, democracy, and the rule of law. He stressed: “It is our common task to follow, honour and protect the provisions [of the Constitution].”
