State Secretary Ondrejcsák represents Slovakia at V4+Korea Forum

On 4-6 September 2019, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Róbert Ondrejcsák visited the Republic of Korea (ROK), where he held talks with Korean Vice Defence Minister Park Jae-min and took part in the Seoul Defence Dialogue (SDD), which is today one of the most significant security conferences in the region of East Asia. The State Secretary also represented Slovakia at the V4+Korea Meeting, which was held in the margins of the SDD at the invitation of the ROK MOD.

During their bilateral meeting, State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák and Vice Defence Minister Park Jae-min affirmed their interest in extending the strong economic ties between both countries to include the field of security and defence. Although economic cooperation has been at high level for several years, defining the common areas of defence interests is only in its initial phase on both sides. Despite this, cyber security and defence industry have been identified as potentially beneficial areas of cooperation for the future. Both partners acknowledged their ambition to exchange views on regional and global security and threats, such as the U.S. withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty as a consequence of Russia’s long-term violation of the INF Treaty. “Despite the geographical distance between our states, the INF Treaty’s demise may result in increased instability in the world and an arms race, which could have a negative impact on Slovakia and South Korea alike. Despite this, we both understand that the U.S. move was inevitable,” said State Secretary Ondrejcsák after the bilateral meeting.

At the V4+Korea Meeting, partners appreciated the interest in the continued strategic dialogue as well as the efforts to find common areas of cooperation. Among them are cyber security and adaptation of armed forces to future technological trends.

In the margins of his meetings, State Secretary Ondrejcsák also visited ASAN, a think tank which is among the country’s leading non-governmental organizations in the field of international relations and security, where he shared his insights.
