Modernization of BMP 2

A joint project of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic, modernization of the infantry fighting vehicle BMP 2, received the Gold IDET News 2013 Award in a category Infantry fighting vehicles in IDET Exhibition in Brno. The representatives of companies participating in the project were presented the award by the Minister of Defence of the SR Martin Glváč and the Czech Minister of Defence Vlastimil Picek.

I am most glad that the Military Repair Plant (VOP)  in Trenčín will be a coordinator of production. I believe that production of the vehicles shall have started by the end of this year and in 2014 the vehicles could be introduced in inventory of the Armed Forces of the SR,’ stated Martin Glváč.

Within the modernization of the vehicle, it is allowed for a change as to a layout with respect to dismounting infantry and interior equipment. Equally, the turret assembly should undergo modernization, just as the optical and aiming devices and sights or a communication system. A new integrated fire-control system should be installed in BMP 2, which shall contribute to enhanced ballistic resistance.

The project of modernization was set up by joint stock companies VOP Trenčín and the Electrotechnical Research and Projecting Institute in Nová Dubnica and EXCALIBURARMY Ltd. in Přelouč. ‘The final decision on whether or not the infantry fighting vehicles will undergo modernization will be taken by the end of 2014 or even in 2015. Naturally, I lend my support to the joint production by the Slovak and Czech facilities,’ stated the Czech Minister of Defence Vlastimil Picek.

The International Exhibition of Defence and Security Technologies IDET 2013 was held on 22 – 24 May in Brno exhibition ground, with more than 200 exhibitors from 22 countries taking part, seven of them being from Slovakia. The specialized defence equipment exhibition is held regularly in alternate years in Brno (IDET) and Bratislava (IDEB).
