MOD military and civilian staff commemorate the formation of Slovak Republic and Armed Forces

Ministry of Defence military and civilian staff gathered today (7 January) at the MOD Club for a ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of the formation of the Slovak Republic and its Armed Forces.

Speaking in front of the gathered personnel, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš thanked all MOD service members and civilians for their work last year and wished them a happy and prosperous 2019. “We can evaluate that last year we did our utmost to make our young armed forces modern,” he said, highlighting the significance of the historically largest and real modernization.

Shifting from modernization to better Service conditions for serving personnel, Minister Gajdoš said: “Yet we are aware that modernization is not the only condition for making our armed forces viable, modern and ready to accomplish their mission. Therefore, from the perspective of our department, 2019 must be the year of the soldier.” In this respect, he added that the measures announced beforehand are designed to stabilise military personnel, increase Service pay and social benefits, enhance military training, as well as restoring infrastructure.
