Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď embarked on a series of working meetings in Seoul on his official visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK), including holding talks with South Korean National Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup and representatives of the ROK's defence industry.
The leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work closely towards forging closer SVK-ROK defence and security ties. This marked the first official bilateral meeting between the Ministers of Defence of Slovakia and South Korea. Central themes of the bilateral meeting included a deepening of SVK-ROK cooperation and Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Speaking about the MOU, Jaroslav Naď said: “South Korea is not only a guarantor of security in the South East Asia region, but also an important international security actor. With the signing of the MOU, we have set out the conditions of our cooperation in the political-military area, enabling us to intensify our mutual engagement in many aspects.”
Importantly, Mr Naď confirmed they also discussed opportunities for Slovak defence businesses on the market in South Korea and in the wider region and for our technological R&D know-how.
Minister Naď and Minister Lee also talked about future cooperation opportunities in the field of military cyber defence. In light of its military-political anchoring as well as economic and technological potential, the ROK represents a prospective cooperation partner for Slovakia.
Expressing support for South Korea's efforts to keep stability in the region, Minister Naď said: “We welcome all initiatives that the Republic of Korea has put forward to ensure the Democratic People’s Republic of Koreaʼs (DPRK) denuclearisation, prosperity and peace on the Korean Peninsula. Slovakia will continue to support South Korea in its efforts to achieve these goals.” Mr Naď underpinned the key importance of the international community in working together towards these objectives.
