The United States of America will provide Slovakia with a grant of $200m in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) to help modernise the Slovak Armed Forces against the backdrop of Slovakia's provision of technical assistance to Ukraine. Slovakia is one of the highest recipients of military aid from the FMF pot which the USA is to share among 18 countries.
In response to U.S. Congress passing an FMF package for Slovakia, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Slovakia is a responsible ally that has a clear compass of values, even in these difficult times. We have been active in adopting steps to bolster the defence of us all across the whole of the Alliance. And our support for Ukraine, which has been defending itself resolutely and heroically against the Russian aggression, comes as an important part of these efforts.” Minister Naď appreciated the unprecedented level of U.S.-SVK bilateral relationship, which presents a positive picture of Slovakia to the world.
The Ministry of Defence will use the FMF funds to procure military equipment, with the aim of strengthening the security of Slovakia, the element of deterrence and collective interoperability in line with its NATO Force Development Goals. “This is a major opportunity to diversify our military systems, especially the Soviet-type inventory on which we can no longer – and donʼt want to – be dependent,” Minister Naď emphasised.
Minister Naď was also pleased to announce an additional $5.8m in U.S. funding for projects under the Countering Russian Influence Fund (CRIF). These projects will support Slovakia's capacity for strategic communications to the benefit of making civil society more resilient. The Ministry of Defence will release more information on the use of the funds as and when it becomes available.
According to U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia Gautam Rana, this FMF package for Slovakia demonstrates the strength of U.S.-SVK bilateral cooperation and acknowledges the solidarity Slovakia has shown to Ukraine. “As we prepare to celebrate 30 years of bilateral relations between our countries, this FMF package reaffirms our commitment to our friendship, the importance of shared values, and the understanding that we are stronger together,” U.S. Ambassador Rana said.
