MOD has co-sponsored a statue of General M. R. Štefánik, one of the most prominent figures of his time, which has now been unveiled in Stará Ľubovňa

Under its MOD Grant Scheme to protect and cultivate Slovakia's historical and cultural heritage with a focus on military history, the Ministry of Defence has co-sponsored the design and production of a statue of General M. R. Štefánik, donating €25,000 towards the sculpting project to Stará Ľubovňa Town Council.

Speaking at the General Štefánik Statue unveiling ceremony in Stará Ľubovňa, Jaroslav Naď said: “This imaginative sculpture is a reminder of the life and actions of a great personality of his time and our history. It is in a genuinely warm manner that the statue depicts General Štefánik to young people and children, who, looking through the lens of his period camera or sitting down on his ship (travel) trunk with his military uniform on it, can take a photo of themselves and the generalʼs statue.”

As Jaroslav Naď reminded us, bringing history closer to people in a captivating way is an effective way of raising public awareness of the greatest historical figures and events of our nation.

The General Štefánik Statue, designed by sculpture artist Peter Mészároš, is made of patinated bronze, as are all its elements. The 180cm tall statue, mounted on a round granite plinth, was created by means of realistic modelling with the use of the gentle spatula technique.
