At today's Remembrance Day ceremony at the Memorial dedicated to the crew of Wellington Bomber MF 458 'A' of No. 40 Squadron RAF in Čunovo, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Marian Majer and British Ambassador Nigel Baker paused to pay tribute to the Royal Air Force (RAF) service personnel who fought against Nazi troops and sacrificed their lives in the line of duty in Slovakia.
In his statement at the RAF memorial, State Secretary Marian Majer said: “With their sacrifices, these heroes, too, wrote their names into the history books, bringing better future to us all and the free democratic world. They put their lives on the line as airmen beyond the borders of their homeland – for that, we owe them a tremendous debt of thanks and respect, and we pledge never to forget their actions.”
On an aerial mining mission over the Danube River on 5 October 1944, the crew of Wellington Bomber MF 458 'A' of No. 40 Squadron RAF were tasked with dropping mines into the Danube River to stop enemy vessels. Sadly, the plane was hit by flak from a German minesweeper close to Čunovo. All five crew died when the aircraft exploded and plunged into the water.
