A military facility in eastern Slovakia will be involved in repairing the German military equipment, gifted to Ukraine, which has been damaged in combat. This follows on from a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the German Federal Ministry of Defence and the Slovak Ministry of Defence in Brussels today.
This intergovernmental document sets the legal framework for the scale of repairs on the German military equipment damaged in combat in Ukraine. The full cost of repairs will be covered by Germany. Repair work mostly expected on such pieces of equipment as howitzers and air defence systems is set to begin in a couple of weeks.
Commenting on the MOU, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “We were approached with this request for cooperation by the German side as recently as this September. In light of the high quality SVK-DEU relationship and the continued urgency to support Ukraine, of course, our teams have worked intensely on drafting an agreement, so that we could go ahead with the repair of equipment at the earliest opportunity. Indeed, it is precisely because the Russian aggression in Ukraine is not waiting, there must be no delay in our assistance.”
Repair work on the damaged equipment will be conducted at a military facility based in Michalovce.
