Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď in Kyiv: Ukraine is facing war, cold and dark, Slovakia is to provide it with a “winter package“

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď along with Foreign and European Affairs Minister Rastislav Káčer and Economy Minister Karel Hirman travelled today to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defence Minister Olexii Reznikov in Kyiv. There, the head of the SVK MOD updated them on the latest SVK Government-approved tranche of military support for Ukraine. Our eastern neighbour has been fighting back against the Russian Federation's aggression for over the past nine months already.

Paying tribute to the tenacity of the Ukrainian people in Kyiv, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Not only is Ukraine facing this unprecedented war, but also cold and dark due to Russiaʼs strikes targeting strategic infrastructure. Sadly, I have seen first-hand a trail of fear and tears in their eyes, yet still retaining the formidable strength of their resolve to fight on for their country, families, and friends – and freedom. The Ukrainians are fully entitled to that and Slovakia supports them in their effort.”

This time Slovakia is to provide a further €800,000 in military assistance to Ukraine. As part of this winter package, Ukraine will get extremely needed cold winter kits, petrol power generators, power supply units, transformers, materiel for heating networks, and food supplies.

In addition, Slovakia is to send its Božena tracked mine-clearing unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) worth €1.8m, body armour systems worth €1.2m, and additional military assistance worth €6.3m to the country.

With the latest winter package, Slovakia has so far gifted around €167.8m in aid to Ukraine since the outbreak of Russia's invasion in February. This includes Slovakia's S-300 air defence (AD) system, Božena tracked UGVs, five helicopters, munitions, fuel, and firearms. Under the ring swap deal with Germany, the defence aid also comprises 30 BVP-1 IFVs transferred to Ukraine in exchange for 15 Leopard 2A4 MBTs.

On their official visit to Ukraine, the Slovak delegation took a trip to the heavily bombed town of Irpin, and then headed into meetings with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and First Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Alexander Kornienko. While reflecting on the sacrifice of the Ukrainian nation, the ministers also paused to pay their respects to all those fallen for Ukraine during Russia's aggression and laid bouquets of flowers at the Wall of Remembrance at St Michael's Cathedral and Monastery in Kyiv.
