In the presence of Slovak Army and German Bundeswehr generals, a Michalovce-based military unit has today officially launched the battle damage repair of German-made equipment currently being used on operations in Ukraine.
At the battle damage repair (BDR) facility, up to six DEU technicians are to repair German-made operational equipment, to be more precise, howitzer gun and anti-aircraft systems. The repair operations will be funded by Germany, while Slovakia will provide the workshop and access to electricity and water.
Highlighting Slovakia's unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia's aggression and recognising the critical role of battle damage repair, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The Slovak Republic has put its strategic location and available facility to good use by providing further support to its neighbour and deepening its bilateral ties with Germany.”
Looking ahead, there is potential for future collaboration on the repair of Slovak-operated, German-made equipment with German companies, including on the Leopard 2A4s, as they start arriving in Slovakia as early as this month.
The BDR facility for the out-of-theatre repair of UKR military equipment was established on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the German Federal MOD and the Slovak MOD in Brussels on 15 November 2022. There are plans to keep the workshop operational for a year. Further decisions will be made depending on the developments in Ukraine.
