Soldiers need an adequate environment, Trebišov-based units receive record investments into infrastructure

On his away-day trip to eastern Slovakia today, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď was given a tour of Trebišov barracks, home to 21 Mechanised Battalion, 14 Tank Battalion, and 52 Airborne Battalion. He was particularly interested in inspecting the state of infrastructure repairs and upgrades.

Last year the Trebišov-based military facilities saw a total of €370,000 spent on extensive repairs to the buildings' roofs, protective insulation, floors, lifts, and interior wall plaster, as well as on installing new lighting systems, replacing the windows and doors, and painting the poles across the barracks.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Gradually, we are paying off the investment debt caused by the long-time absence of genuine interest in the environment in which our Service personnel are serving our country. Step by step, we are working to create adequate Service conditions for them, which requires substantial investments.“

Totalling more than €740,000, this year the MOD will invest in repairs to the buildings across Trebišov barracks twice as much as last year. These will include, among other things, painting the metal roof coverings; replacing down pipes and drainage channels, internal and external doors, windows, and garage gates; repairing facades, toilet facilities, air conditioning systems, and balconies; and replacing the glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC) structures, sewage system, water mains, floor and wall tiles, and furniture. Importantly, the buildings will be fitted with intelligent energy consumption monitors.

According to the plan over the next five years, investments costing more than a record €29m altogether will be made in support of construction, refurbishment and upgrade works on the MOD estate in Trebišov. The funds will be made available for more extensive projects, for example, the construction of a garage, a hall, an administrative building, and a storage facility, the refurbishment of barracks, the installation of simulators, and other projects.
