Museum of Slovak Emigration to North America or “Kasigarda” in Pavlovce nad Uhom is historically unique

From today onwards, the Museum of Slovak Emigration to North America or the “Kasigarda” Museum, located in Pavlovce nad Uhom's village area of Ťahyňa, will shed more light on the history of Slovak emigrants to North America. In attendance at the Museum opening ceremony was Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď. The Ministry of Defence has lent support to the Museum project with a €40,000 grant from the MOD Grant Scheme.

Speaking at the Museum opening ceremony, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Over 4,000 Museum Collection objects speak of the part of our history that has not until recently been mapped out in such detail. Interestingly, these unique artefacts are supported by personal testimonies. A huge thank you to Assoc Prof PhDr Martin Javor PhD, the man behind the project, because it generally holds true that the preservation of history will enable the future generations to understand who we are.”

Being the first of its kind in Slovakia, the “Kasigarda” Museum aims to save one of the Zeplín region's last “American houses” turned into the Museum building and to promote military history by presenting ethnic Slovaks serving in the U.S. Army in the 20th century, especially from World War I to Operation Desert Storm. “Kasigarda” was a misspeak by Slovak immigrants for the Castle Garden, the first official immigrant processing centre on the eastern coast of the USA.
