State Secretary Majer at Riga StratCom Dialogue: “Strategic communications is a vital element of the fight against disinformation and propaganda”

During his trip to Latvia, State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Marian Majer today took part in the Riga StratCom Dialogue 2023, organised by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence (NATO StratCom COE), where he spoke on the Taking Stock of our Readiness panel discussion, focusing on strategic communications (StratCom), freedom of expression, and the readiness of our society to respond to hybrid actors' information operations (InfoOps). As part of his official programme in Riga, the State Secretary also held a bilateral meeting with his Latvian counterpart, Jãnis Garisons.
Referring to Russia's long-lasting use of information warfare to interfere in the political processes of sovereign countries, State Secretary Marian Majer said: “We must not let up in our determination to mitigate the effects of propaganda, disinformation narratives and malign influences, which are aimed at breaking down trust in society, democracy, public institutions, and Slovakia’s anchorage in the Euro-Atlantic community.”
Mr Majer and the other panellists agreed that educating society is key to the success of countering disinformation. He reminded that Slovakia has been a member of NATO StratCom COE since 2019, thanks to which it has worked even more in synergy with other Alliance members, coordinating its steps to resist disinformation and propaganda.
Elsewhere, Marian Majer met with State Secretary of the LVA Ministry of Defence Jãnis Garisons for bilateral talks. They went over issues of common interest ahead of the NATO Vilnius Summit and the strengthening of the Alliance's eastern flank.
On the sidelines of the conference in Riga, Marian Majer also took time to speak with members of the SVK Delegation to the Riga StratCom Dialogue 2023, comprising subject matter specialists (SMEs) on strategic communications and disinformation from across the SVK government and NGO sectors.
