To commemorate the 143rd anniversary of General Štefánik's birthday, the Slovak Defence Ministry held the 5th edition of the Veteran Ascent of Mt Ďumbier, the aim of which is to pay tribute to one of the most prominent personalities of Slovak national history and to all veterans.
In keeping with tradition, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár joined veterans, soldiers of the Slovak Armed Forces, service members of the NATO Multinational Battlegroup Slovakia, civil servants and civilian employees in Defence, and a large number of members of the public in taking the hiking route to the top of Mt Ďumbier.
Speaking from Mt Ďumbier, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “The Veteran Ascent to the highest peak of the Low Tatras is a great tradition, with which we come together to honour a great man of our history as well as war and contemporary veterans. Also, it is a wonderful opportunity to meet not just everyone who cares about the preservation of our historical memory and respect for Gen Štefánik, but also lovers of our mountains and their beauty.”
A perfect place to stop along the hiking route before reaching Mt Ďumbier was the WW2 Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Memorial at the M. R. Štefánik Chalet, where the head of the MOD along with other event participants paid tribute to the heroes who took part in the national struggle for liberation.
