Defence Minister Sklenár receives an update on the current status of defence infrastructure on his visit to Prešov Air Base

On his away-day trip to military sites across Slovakia today, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár also visited Prešov Air Base (AB), home to 51 Slovak Air Force Wing (51 SVK AF WG). He was interested in the Wing's personnel fill rates, the current needs of airmen, and the progress made in the performance of their tasks. Importantly, he received an updated on the current status of refurbishment works to the base and local defence infrastructure.

Speaking of improvements, in progress and planned, for Prešov AB, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “As part of regular maintenance & repair activities this year, the roof of a storage warehouse is just being repaired and toilet facilities in one of the hangars have been renovated. Alongside this, there are several investment projects planned both for this and next year, most notably, the construction of a new hangar for the storage and servicing of six UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters under a contract worth €3.2m, VAT included.”

In addition to defending SVK airspace and providing Close Air Support (CAS) to SVK Army units, 51 Slovak Air Force Wing Prešov also has an irreplaceable place in domestic disaster relief operations as its military helicopters can quickly be called into action in the Search & Rescue (SAR) and firefighting roles. The Wing's Air Combat Squadron operates Mil Mi-17 and UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters.

The Defence Minister concluded his statement with a message of support, saying: “Our airmen are real professionals who deserve the most adequate conditions to complete their assigned tasks as required. I am pleased that we are on track to gradually achieve this goal.”
