Defence Minister Martin Sklenár received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Slovakia, His Excellency Nicos P. Nicolaou, at the Slovak Defence Ministry in Bratislava today. They talked about deepening bilateral cooperation with a particular focus on Defence & Security and the challenges that lie ahead. It was his last meeting with the Defence Minister before his tenure as Ambassador to Slovakia comes to an end.
Minister Sklenár and Ambassador Nicolaou paid special attention to SVK peacekeepers deployed on the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP), where they oversee the ceasefire between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, contributing to the restoration and maintenance of law and order on the island.
On SVK military presence in Cyprus, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “As part of our presence in international crisis management missions and operations, the highest number of our troops are in Cyprus. Through our armed forcesʼ active engagement in this mission, we have been contributing to deepening stability and security in the Mediterranean for 22 years already. I appreciate what we send out to the world in this message.”
The Defence Minister confirmed the Slovak side's interest in keeping SVK forces in Cyprus, adding: “The ambassador and I also talked about other capabilities we could possibly provide.” Among the positives about the Slovak Contingent (SLOVCON) on UN peacekeeping duties in Cyprus, the head of the MOD highlighted an increase in the number of servicewomen, with 29 servicewomen involved.
Minister Sklenár and Ambassador Nicolaou commended SVK-CYP cooperation in the field of military education so far. The two sides also tackled ways in which to intensify defence industrial cooperation. At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Sklenár extended his invitation for Cypriot officials to the Slovak International Air Fest (SIAF) 2023 at Malacky - Kuchyňa Air Base and to the International Defence Exhibition Bratislava (IDEB) 2023, taking place in early September and October, respectively.
