Aircraft Repair Company Trenčín is the first and so far the only entity in Slovakia to receive the Design Organisation Approval Certificate from EASA

Aircraft Repair Company Trenčín (LOTN), the state-owned and MOD-run joint stock company, has reached a landmark milestone. LOTN is the first and so far the only entity in the field of aviation in Slovakia to have received the Design Organisation Approval (DOA) Certificate from the Cologne-based European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), allowing it to upgrade aircraft avionics and electrical systems. The DOA Certificate is issued by the Agency according to AESA PART 21.

Sharing his thoughts on the success of LOTN, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “To obtain the certificate, the design organisations must meet a set of AESAʼs rigorous process and personnel criteria. To illustrate this, the same criteria apply to the certification of aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing or Airbus. Thanks to this, Aircraft Repair Company Trenčín brings know-how which has not been here until now and which will benefit the entire aviation industry in Slovakia.”

Chair of the Board of Directors and Director General of LOTN Ľubomír Galko said: “The process was not an easy one at all. We worked hard for three years to get the certificate. As part of the process, the company completed a Let L-410 Turbolet capability upgrade for the Slovak Air Force. In doing so, our employees demonstrated their high expertise and language skills. For LOTN, this is a landmark milestone which will enable us to access new business opportunities in the field of aircraft avionics and electrical system upgrades.”

As far as LOTN's design activities are concerned, this authorisation allows the company to make significant changes to aircraft avionics and electrical systems, specifically to communication systems, diagnostic capabilities, flight displays, navigation systems, and data tracking and recording systems.

And so is the case with the aircraft's electrical systems – the components of the power generation and distribution system and the external lighting system. In addition, the company will be allowed to design certain structural changes to the airframe for the purposes of installing consoles or adjusting instrument panels.

Examples of aircraft modernisation projects include the integration of modern “Glass Cockpit” technology, the SATCOM or GPS upgrade, the installation of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), the provision of a technical solution to the MODE-S and ADS-B transponders, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II upgrade, etc.

In closing, Ľubomír Galko said: “Iʼd like to extend my thanks and best wishes to all those from LOTN and the MOD who took part in this unique project. This is our shared success that has placed our company among the relevant players of the aviation industry.”
