During his away-day trip to Banská Bystrica, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár visited the DUKLA Military Sports Centre, where he was updated on the Centre's achievements, sports facilities, reconstruction projects and everyday functioning. Having brought home 27 medals so far this year, sportsmen and women of the Slovak National Team in Defence have continued to expand the DUKLA collection of medals in precious metals. They won a record 72 medals at the world's leading sporting events last year.
Speaking about his thoughts on DUKLA's impressive track of accomplishments, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “DUKLA has, since time immemorial, formed an inseparable part of Defence and military sports. With their achievements, the sportsmen and women wearing DUKLAʼs logo and colours have proved that they can compete with the best athletes in the world. Naturally, they need quality facilities for this, so we are trying to create the best possible training conditions for them. And, even with the support of the Ministry of Defence, I believe we will see them breaking their records, both in number and preciousness, year after year.”
According to Director of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Lt Col Matej Tóth, the goal is to make Banská Bystrica a leading centre of military sports, through investments in projects and training programmes. One ongoing impactful project is to convert a kitchen and dining facility into a modern training and diagnostic centre with a judo hall.
On the strengths of Slovakia's military sports, Lt Col Matej Tóth said: “In some sports, we really have the best of the best – whether it be canoe slalom, skiing, shooting, ski mountaineering or fitness, but there is also good quality in athletics, judo, and other sports. We have a clear vision and we want to deliver it with the help of the Ministry of Defence.”
