A novelty in care for war veterans: MOD introduces field workers of MOD Veterans Welfare Service (VWS) to Slovakia's regions

The Slovak Defence Ministry has launched a new project to improve care for war veterans, with field workers of the MOD Veterans Welfare Service (VWS) now out in the veterans' community in Slovakia's regions.

The VWS field workers are tasked with keeping in contact with war veterans via phone, making home visits to check on them, providing one to one professional help and advice on welfare issues and healthcare concerns, finding out how veterans' needs can be best met, as well as accompanying them to commemorative ceremonies and events organised by the Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces.

There are two groups of war veterans – one group who took part in the national liberation struggle throughout WWII and the other who served on missions and operations abroad.

Director of the MOD Human Resources (HR) Department Martin Jakál said: “I see this project as a way of giving a helping hand to those who sacrificed themselves in the service of our country. We want our veterans to know that we deeply value what they did for all of us, that they remain part of the Armed Forces family even after the end of their military careers, and that we will never forget them.”

The MOD's project is designed to cater for the needs of veterans aged over 65. Veterans needing help can contact the VWS field workers via the MOD website at Terénni pracovníci.
