Defence Minister Martin Sklenár received the Ambassador of Singapore to Slovakia, His Excellency Chay Wai Chuen, at MOD Main Building in Bratislava today. During their conversation, they discussed Slovak defence policy in the face of the security developments in Central Europe, the situation on the ground in Ukraine, and the defence policy of Singapore as a country in the Southeast Asian region.
Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “Even though our countries are separated by a great geographical distance, our positions on helping Ukraine are very close – no one can be allowed to violate the sovereignty of another independent country – and thatʼs what brings us together.”
Ambassador Chay Wai Chuen condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, deeming it “a violation of international law”. The two leaders spoke about the form and volume of aid that has been provided to the war-torn country. To this end, the Ambassador informed the Minister that Singapore has donated humanitarian aid of $7.4m to Kyiv through the Singapore Red Cross (SRC).
Minister Sklenár and Ambassador Chay Wai Chuen went over the conclusions of the NATO Vilnius Summit. This brought an historic strengthening of NATO's collective defence, particularly the bolstering of the Alliance's defences on the eastern flank, and paved the way for future ties with Ukraine.
In this context, Minister Sklenár praised the approval of the new Defence Production Action Plan, which will help revive national defence industries and invest in innovative technologies in order to resolve the challenges of the future. Finally, they also opened the issue of opportunities for expanding bilateral defence and security cooperation.
