Ministry of Defence reopens Defence School of Transport after 20 years

The Training and Mobilisation Force Generation Base Martin has opened up the gates of the Defence School of Transport, launching its first Category B Licence Driver Training Course. The MOD has restored the Armed Forces' capability to deliver driver training to service personnel they lost in 2003.

The first dozen drivers have joined the Category B Licence Driver Training Course, which incorporates theory and practical modules and is due to last until 25 August 2023. The theory module is being delivered in the newly reconstructed classrooms of the Martin base. Drivers will be given driving lessons on public roads across the Martin Garrison.

The establishment of the Defence School of Transport comes as there is a shortage of drivers in the Armed Forces. The School will respond to the modernisation programmes, as new vehicles enter service. The School wants to provide driver training on the military wheeled platforms operated by the Armed Forces and licence acquisition across the most common licence categories.

Col Pavol Barančík, Commander of the Training and Mobilisation Force Generation Base Martin, said: “The possibility of getting the driver’s licence is a motivational benefit for those wanting to join the Armed Forces.”

For the past 20 years, all driver training courses have been contracted from the civilian sector. As well as addressing the shortage of drivers, the Defence School of Transport is expected to generate savings in overall driver training costs.
