Ministry of Defence pays tribute to the memory of political prisoners at the walls of Leopoldov Prison

In today's ceremony at the walls of Leopoldov Prison, Secretary General of the MOD Service Office Peter Kozák paid tribute to the memory of political prisoners who, unjustly and unlawfully, became criminals at the hands of the Communist regime.

Secretary General of the MOD Service Office Peter Kozák said: “Systematic political terror and fabricated trials brought personal life traumas to thousands of innocent people, leaving a mark on their families forever. Totalitarianism deprived them of freedom, health, dreams and prospects for a peaceful life and a dignified future. Therefore, we will always vigorously protect the democratic establishment and values and the rule of law. We must never allow people to suffer in such a way and for no reason.”

Over 70,000 people were wrongly convicted of committing political crimes in Slovakia. Between 1948 and 1989, up to 450,000 political prisoners served their prison sentences in what is today's territory of the Slovak and Czech Republics. The August ceremony at the walls of Slovakia's oldest prison has been organised by the Slovak Political Prisoners Confederation since 2009.
