State Secretary Marian Majer honours the memory of the victims of Slovakia's WW2 Resistance to Nazis in a commemoration in Pezinok

As part of the 79th Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Anniversary celebrations, State Secretary of the Slovak Defence Ministry Marian Majer participated in a commemoration in Pezinok, honouring the memory of the victims of Slovakia's WW2 Resistance to Nazis.

In a statement, State Secretary Marian Majer said: “It is our task to make sure that those who gave their lives in the Uprising are not forgotten. Otherwise, it can easily happen that what we take for granted today – values such as democracy, peace and calm – may no more be there from one day to another. As we intensely remember the Uprising these days, letʼs not forget the heroism, suffering and sacrifice of those who fought in the Slovak National Uprising.”

The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, with Banská Bystrica as the centre of the Resistance. In view of its scope, length and military significance, it ranks among the most important anti-Nazi resistance movements. The 79th Slovak National Uprising Anniversary celebrations will culminate at and around the SNP Memorial and Museum in Banská Bystrica on 29 August 2023. This year's celebrations are mainly dedicated to the wider public.
