Military personnel are to support police forces in dealing with the latest migration flow through Slovakia. Based on the decision of the SVK government, 500 military personnel have been set aside for this mission, starting from 31 December 2023.
While out on mixed patrols, soldiers will put their best effort into the performance of assistance tasks such facility security and logistics support. Their mission will require working day and night shifts.
According to Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer, the Armed Forces' support will enable police forces to redirect their personnel to where they are needed most to deal with the situation on the ground.
Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “This is not a patch, but a solution to the migrants issue. According to available information, most migrants are not interested in staying in Slovakia. It has once again been confirmed that the Armed Forces are a mainstay on which the State and our citizens can always rely.”
In the current security climate, the Armed Forces will continue to maintain stability and peace in the country, guarantee Slovakia's defences, and meet international obligations.
To enable the swift transportation of migrants by the Ministry of the Interior, a controlled passage of migrants through the Training Centre Lešť was allowed under interdepartmental collaboration in recent days, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
