President Zuzana Čaputová attached ribbons to the Colours of ten Armed Forces units. Today's ceremony took place on the parade square in front of the Presidential Palace, in the presence of Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko. The decoration of the Colours was held to mark their renaming. In this ceremonial act, the President bestowed the honour upon the Slovak Armed Forces in recognition of their exemplary service to the country.
In her keynote address, President Zuzana Čaputová said: “The white and burgundy ribbons on your Colours, as the most valuable military symbols, are a mark of gratitude and a show of appreciation for the conscientiousness and dedication with which you undertake the tasks to ensure the continued security of our country.”
In a statement, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “In these times, the Slovak Armed Forces are once again proving that the words of the Oath of Allegiance are no empty promises but lead to real actions of military professionals that benefit the security and defence of this country and its citizens. We can be rightfully proud of them.”
Among the military units that were decorated with the burgundy and white ribbons were: 81 Wing Sliač, 51 Wing Prešov, 46 Wing Kuchyňa, 2 Slovak Air Force Brigade Zvolen, 11 Slovak Air Force Brigade Nitra, 45 Repair Battalion Martin, 21 Self-propelled Artillery Battalion Michalovce, 103 CBRND Battalion Rožňava, 21 Mechanised Battalion Trebišov, and 91 Engineer Regiment Sereď.
The Colour, a ceremonial military flag, represents one of the first and at the same time the most important symbols of the Slovak Armed Forces. It is a symbol of moral honour and military bravery in the fight for victory over the enemy, for one's homeland. The Colours are issued to military formations and units on loan from the President of the Slovak Republic. Ribbons are attached to the Colours when there is a change to the name of a military unit or to its honorary or historical name.
