Winners of Military Deed of the Year 2022 Awards announced

In their 26th year, the Military Deed of the Year 2022 Awards, the goal of which is to celebrate the extraordinary actions of soldiers and the commendable efforts of ordinary citizens, know their winners. The laureates received their awards in the presence of top MOD officials and Armed Forces leaders, service personnel, and guests of honour. A gala evening with the awards ceremony took place at the MOD Club on 22 September 2023.

The Military Deed of the Year Awards celebrate the excellence of Slovak military personnel, who, going above and beyond in their military roles, send out a strong moral message. The Awards also recognise the actions of people who do not work in the Ministry of Defence, but they spread the voice of the Slovak Armed Forces or promote military history.

As Defence Minister Martin Sklenár reminded us, we have had the opportunity to appreciate the exceptional stories of military professionals from across the Armed Forces for 26 years already, he said: “Everyday life brings moments which are worthy of appreciation year after year, as was the case in 2022, which was so cruelly affected by the outbreak of the military conflict right across the border of our republic,” he said, adding, “While I was reading the nomineesʼ citations, I was filled with deep gratitude and respect for each and every candidate. And with pride because Slovakia has some really brave and good people in the Armed Forces and among our friends.”

The laureates, nominated by military and civilian personnel in Defence and the public, earned the Military Deed of the Year Award in one of the four categories: Rescue of Life, Assistance to the Public, A Friend of the Armed Forces, and Service to the Country. The winners were decided by a panel of MOD judges, led by Commander-in-Chief of the Slovak Armed Forces and President Zuzana Čaputová.

In the 'Rescue of Life' category, 1Lt Peter Višňovský (20 Logs Bn Prešov), SSgt Lukáš Gabák (21 Mech Bn Trebišov), Capt Peter and 1Lt Maroš (SOF) scooped the award for saving the life of a person injured in a road traffic accident.

The laureate of the award in the 'Public Assistance' category was Lt Tomáš Poláček (Training and Mobilization Force Generation Base Martin). His citation recognised his proactive psychological work in the Peace Support Operations (PSO) Training Unit as well as his regular psychological interventions, educational activities, and record of publications.

The award in the 'Friend of the Armed Forces' category went to Jana Medvecová, mayor of Tokajík, a village burned down by Nazis in WWII, for her years-long, dedicated work in preserving the site and the memory of the villagers who were killed and for creating a multimedia exhibition to focus on the events.

Also awarded at the ceremony was Sgt 1C Marcel (5 SOF Regt Žilina), who won the 'Service to the Country' category for leading a mission to evacuate 28 people from Kyiv during the first days of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
