With warm weather coming in and weather conditions getting better, every year the SVK Military Police records a year-on-year surge in civilian drone flights over military facilities and within the airspace of Slovak Air Force bases.
Therefore, the Ministry of Defence calls on drone owners not to fly unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) over defence facilities and infrastructure, reminding that flying UASs over them and within a radius of three nautical miles (approx. 5.6km) from the airfield reference point is banned.
Due to UAS overflights, in some cases aircraft must be diverted from their flight path. Those endangering the safety of aircraft in flight may be subject to criminal charges.
Given that a military installation is a No Drone Zone, the SVK Military Police has the right to interrupt the UAS's operation or eliminate the UAS to ensure the protection of defence infrastructure and assets.
Military Police personnel have powers to take enforcement action against individuals who have conducted unauthorised UAS flights. They track down the drone pilots breaching the flight restrictions, gather evidence and investigate such offences. These may result in civil penalties of up to €500 and prosecutions for criminal use of UASs.
