CEDC Defence Ministers confirm the importance of a united voice for the Central Europe region

On a recent working trip to Hungary, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic, Mr Robert Kaliňák spoke at the Budapest Security Dialogue. He was joined on his visit to the Hungarian capital by Deputy Defence Minister Martin Vojtašovič, who participated in a meeting of Defence Ministers from the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) and Western Balkans (WB) countries. The aim of the CEDC group – of which Slovakia is a member – is to expand defence cooperation between its member states, including through the pooling and sharing of defence capabilities and joint exercises.

The head of the Slovak Defence Ministry thanked his Hungarian partners for hosting the security conference in Budapest, which saw CEDC Defence Ministers in attendance. With its sense of purpose and focus on Central and Southeast Europe's issues and challenges, the conference is one of the largest events of its kind in the region. According to Minister Kaliňák, it also confirmed the relevance of the CEDC as an essential platform to advance the political and security integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union. In his opinion, this grouping of Czechia, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia is of special significance for its exchange of information and coordination of efforts.

Today's security challenges faced in the Western Balkans, European and Euro-Atlantic perspectives on the region, and the establishment of the Western Balkans Security and Defence College (WBSDC) topped the agenda of the CEDC + WB meeting in Budapest.
