Ministry of Defence invites public to Armed Forces Day celebrations in Brezová pod Bradlom

To mark Armed Forces Day, the Slovak Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces will host an engaging programme of entertainment, battle demonstrations, work presentations by men and women of the Armed Forces, and displays of combat vehicles and equipment for the public in Brezová pod Bradlom on Saturday 28 September 2024. In attendance will be President and Commander-in-Chief of the Slovak Armed Forces Peter Pellegrini and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Robert Kaliňák.

Inviting members of the public to attend the Armed Forces Day National Event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Robert Kaliňák said: “This Armed Forces Day will be not just for military enthusiasts, but also for the general public, including families with children. In addition to military demonstrations, we are preparing a cultural programme with a vast array of side events.”

Between 11:30 and 12:30, there will be an Armed Forces ceremony on General M. R. Štefánik Square. From 11:30 to 16:00, visitors will be able to see static and dynamic displays of defence assets. Earlier at 07:00, an ecumenical worship service will be held at the Protestant Church in Brezová pod Bradlom, with military chaplains among the celebrants. Throughout the afternoon, live music entertainment will be provided by singer Peter Bažík, Peter Cmorik Band, Magic Spurs Band and other performers. For families with kids, there will be camouflage face painting and other attractions.

This year's national Armed Forces Day event will feature a parachute drop, a flypast from Slovak Air Force aircraft, and live demonstrations of Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions. “This is the only event where the public will be able to watch dynamic displays of combat vehicles on a large scale. This will only be made possible thanks to local conditions and terrain,” Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko said. Spanish and Portuguese military personnel from the NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia (NATO MN BDE TF SVK) will take part as well.

To mark the victory of the Slovak Nation's first battle for national self-determination, the Slovak Armed Forces annually celebrate Armed Forces Day at the end of September. 22 September 1848 saw Jozef Miloslav Hurban's volunteers, led by Ján Francisci, winning the battle over the Imperial Army and the Hungarian Guards at Brezová pod Bradlom.
