Construction works on new Military Hospital in Prešov are progressing according to plan

Prime Minister Robert Fico, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Robert Kaliňák, and Minister of Health Kamil Šaško were updated on the progress that has been made to date on the construction of the new Military Hospital in Prešov during their visit to the construction site. The new Military Hospital (MH) project is regarded as the SVK Government's strategic investment.

The J. A. Reiman Teaching Hospital in Prešov has been incorporated into the Defence Medical Services (DMS) system since 1 July 2024, when Founding Authority status was transferred from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Defence by way of agreement, consistent with the SVK Government's decision of 17 April 2024.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the MH construction site, Prime Minister Robert Fico said: “This is a huge project and I am pleased to see that the Ministry of Defence has committed a significant part of its budget to the hospital’s construction, thereby contributing to a consolidation of public finances through investments within the military-civilian interface.”

Whilst significantly increasing the quality and availability of healthcare services in eastern Slovakia, the new medical facility will serve not only Slovak Armed Forces service members, but, above all, civilian patients.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Robert Kaliňák said: “Over the past two months after the demolition of individual buildings and since the start of the foundation excavation, 270,000 tonnes of waste material have been removed and 13,000 vehicles have left this construction site. We want this hospital to be completed with high quality and as soon as possible. To make this happen, we must cope with immense pressure on a daily basis. Yet, we are looking at 2027 as a realistic completion date.” He went on to confirm that last year the hospital's debt of €80mil was paid off and it now has a balanced budget.

Marián Križko, Director of the Central Military Hospital Ružomberok and Construction Coordinator of the Military Hospital Prešov, said: “The SVK Government’s decision to build a new hospital is admirable, courageous and good. All of us involved in this project feel we have absolute support from this Government every day. We have worked 24/7 on this project so far, whilst at the same time maintaining high quality healthcare services in the hospital’s existing facilities.”

Juraj Smatana, Director of the J. A. Reiman Teaching Hospital and Polyclinic in Prešov, said: “The new hospital should keep all the departments it has today, plus we want to expand it to include the Neurosurgery Department. In the future, we will also be working to develop medical education programmes in the defence medical environment.”

Minister of Health Kamil Šaško highlighted the justification for this investment, saying: “This is a major project in the healthcare sector. This modern medical facility will stand on this site and will provide a university campus for the teaching, development and advancement of health sciences, in and beyond eastern Slovakia.”

PM Fico and DPM and MINDEF Kaliňák apologised to local residents for any inconvenience associated with on-site construction activities. The Ministry of Defence is doing its utmost to minimise pollution and damage to local infrastructure. Military Police (MP) personnel are overseeing the safety of public roads in the area.
