PM Robert Fico visits MOD to inspect progress with delivery of Gov's Manifesto commitments on defence

The Slovak Defence Ministry hosted Prime Minister Robert Fico, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Robert Kaliňák and other top Defence officials, for an inspection day on 29 May 2025.

The aim of the meeting was to brief the Prime Minister on the current status and delivery of the Defence commitments set out in the SVK Government's 2023-2027 Manifesto, including on the projects and programmes either successfully completed, in the process of completion or under preparation.

Holding the MOD to account to the country's Defence commitments, PM Robert Fico stated: “The Ministry of Defence is a multifunctional ministry that has already fulfilled 75 percent of the tasks arising from the SVK Government’s Manifesto – this is fantastic news – these are truly exceptional results in all areas from defence, missions and operations, Defence Medical Service (DMS) infrastructure, through protection and cultivation of our traditions to major dual use projects. What we can see here are real results and a clear vision for the future.”

Thanking PM Fico for his personal interest and support and all those involved in delivering on all of the SVK Government's commitments, Robert Kaliňák said: “These are not the minister’s results, but rather the results of the entire Ministry. I would like to thank everyone who is fully dedicated to the cause of achieving our common goals. We have accomplished a lot, there are things in process and still many challenges ahead.”

The Defence Ministry has been paying special attention to the modernisation of the Slovak Armed Forces, improving the Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS) for military personnel, and building defence medical and logistics infrastructure. Of equal importance is Slovakia's active role in missions and operations abroad and in the protection and cultivation of its historical traditions and national identity. This includes nation-wide commemorations in tribute to the Slovak National Uprising (29 August - 28 October 1944), the Battle of the Dukla Pass (8 September - 28 October 1944), and Victory in Europe Day (8 May 1945).

With regards to the future projects and programmes, the Defence Ministry will mainly focus on strategic investments in defence assets and equipment, cyber and hybrid security systems, and the SVK Defence Industry capabilities. The planned activities in Defence also reflect the need to construct Defence Medical Service (DMS) hospitals with dual military and civilian use in Prešov, Ružomberok and Bratislava, to protect defence infrastructure, and to roll out a dual education and training programme across schools to develop the technical competencies of future defence professionals.

The Ministry of Defence remains fully committed to following through on the SVK Government's strategic commitments and taking action to build the nation's resilience against today's and tomorrow's security threats.
